Supporting children with Speech Sounds
I have 20 years experience of supporting children with speech sounds. I am trained and/or familiar with the following therapies:
PROMPT trained. PROMPT is primarily used to support children with motor speech disorders e.g. Childhood Apraxia of Speech and articulation difficulties
DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing ) Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme and Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment. These interventions are primarily used to support children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
Phonological therapies such as Cycles, the Complexity Approach and Minimal Pairs Approach. These are for children who can produce a sound in isolation but are using patterns/processes that we expect to resolve at different ages e.g. replacing “g” with “d” so saying “dough” for “go”; reducing /s/ clusters such as saying “nake” for “snake”, “dares” for “stairs” or “soak” for “smoke”.
Core Vocabulary Therapy, primarily used for children who are produced a high number of words inconsistently
Traditional Articulation Therapy for children who need help to produce a sound in isolation. This may include children who use active nasal fricatives and frontal/lateral lisps.
Makaton, Signalong and picture based communication alternatives to support children to communicate effectively
It is important to mention that I take an holistic approach to therapy. Often a child may require support with more than their speech sounds. I consider a child’s wellbeing and sensory processing needs, and I am a trained Forest School Leader to enable me to work effectively outdoors.
